Assessment

Assessment

Assessment is a vital tool used to help children make progress in their learning. Assessment allows teachers to identify what our pupils know and can do and what they need to learn next.  It also allow school leaders to assess strengths in our curriculum and areas for development.

Assessment, recording and reporting information is used in our school by all staff including teachers, subject leaders, SENco and school leaders. It is also used by Academy Councillors to identify the priority areas in our school improvement plan.

At St Michael’s, we believe that assessment, recording, reporting and target setting is:

  • formative and summative
  • ongoing and is part of our teaching practice to ensure clear, appropriate learning objectives/ intentions
  • used to help pupils show what they know, understand and can do
  • used to help pupils understand what they need to do to improve
  • used by teachers to evaluate learning and inform future planning and teaching for the pupils in their class
  • used to inform SEND Support Passports and Annual Reviews for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)
  • Used to support monitoring of the curriculum planning
  • Used to inform parents about their child’s progress and key next steps

How teachers assess pupil's achievements:

Teachers:

  • share clear learning intentions with pupils
  • ensure that all pupils know what they have to achieve in the lesson
  • provide pupils with immediate feedback and the opportunity to improve their work
  • set clear achievable next steps through written feedback
  • use a range of assessment tools including questioning, observation, quizzes, work scrutiny and summative tests
  • support pupils with peer and self-assess their learning
  • use assessment to inform planning for individuals, groups and their class
