March 7th 2024

St. Michael's joined the rest of the country and celebrated World Book Day on Thursday 7th March.

It was a real pleasure to see the whole school community engaging in the exciting world of books and parents, staff and children went above and beyond to mark the day.

Children and staff really got into the joy of the day by dressing up as book characters. The children's wide range of costumes really celebrated their love of reading and the variety of books they have been enjoying.

WE think the school stairs particularly enjoyed being adorned with potato book characters throughout the week. Everybody's efforts were outstanding and Ms Awuye found it incredibly difficult to choose her winners. The range of characters and book inspiration was vast and really encouraged some excellent book conversations during the school day.

We began the day with a whole school assembly, where we read The Oak Tree by Julia Donaldson (the book the whole school was focusing on for the day!) and heard from the author/poet herself as to where and when she first found a love for writing.

Then, in class, the children were given the opportunity to explore the book further through a range of exciting activities, such as art and writing.

Children were also given the opportunity to apply for a Reading Blue Peter badge. These will take some time to come but the children worked hard on book reviews and, in time, will be rewarded for their efforts.

We ended the day with staff heading to a different class to share a story of their choosing with the children.

We hope that the day has inspired our children to pick up more books and maybe aspire to be authors themselves.
